GFAOP (Franco-African Pediatric Oncology Group) is a non-profit association whose primary mission is treating children with cancer in Africa. It was established in October 2000 by Professor Jean Lemerle.

GFAOP seeks to meet the needs of many African pediatricians trained in France who, on returning to their countries of origin, have found themselves unable to provide adequate treatment for certain illnesses and pathologies, including cancer.

Since its beginning, GFAOP has enabled African pediatric oncologists to join forces with their French colleagues and work together to develop modern treatment attuned to the circumstances of their countries, so that ill children can receive, while remaining at or close to home, care that conforms as closely as possible to international recommendations for health care ethics.

Today, twelve pediatric oncology units have been opened and they have already provided care to more than 4,500 children.

GFAOP’s headquarters is located at the Gustave Roussy Institute in Villejuif (France), Europe’s premier cancer center.

European Cancer Canter’s partnership with GFAOP is centered on clinical research and training in the field of pediatric oncology.
